Basement Waterproofing Done Correctly
Basement waterproofing is one of the most
significant challenges facing any homeowner.
If you have a basement, you understand what we mean. Water
seems to seep in from any number of places, and no matter how
hard you work, you manage to find some small puddles after
every rain. The only way to keep the water from returning is by
basement waterproofing. But the process has to be done right.
There are probably many tiny cracks in your foundation, and
these cracks allow the water to seep in. Each of these cracks
must be completely sealed.
Why is this so important? Well there are numerous problems
that can be caused by basement water. If you have furniture or
even storage items down there, those items will be damaged by
water. Mold of course is a serious problem and a most
environment is a prime breeding ground for mold. The only way
to put an end to the problem is by basement waterproofing.
Start by getting a special sealant designed for this
purpose, then paint it on the lower half of every wall. This
sealant will fill in all the cracks that always develop over
time. The sealant is colorless. This is where most people stop
and that's a mistake. Sealing the inside is important, but
sealing the outside is equally important. This will create a
barrier on both sides of the wall against water.
This is not a difficult job for a do it yourselfer. You can
buy the sealant and paint the wall yourself. But if you're not
confident you can do it right, you can also hire someone to
make sure the job is done properly. Normally it will take a few
days for the sealant to fully dry, and once it does, your
basement water problems should be solved.
Naturally there is some expense in this, but basement
waterproofing sure beats the expense of repairing your walls
and floors, or the expense of replacing your furniture. That's
why it's important not to go and buy the cheapest sealant you
can find. Get a quality sealant, and if you live on a hillside
or on property with a lot of trees, this becomes even more
important. Having quality gutters installed and of course
directing the flow of water away from the home is another way
to keep your basement dry.
The bottom line is that a good basement waterproofing is the
best way to keep your basement dry.
