Basement Mold And How To Prevent It

There's no faster way to ruin a perfectly useful room than with the appearance of basement mold.

Think about all the things people can and do use their basement's for. Maybe playing pool, watching movies, or just doing laundry. Now imagine you're doing any of these things down there when all of a sudden your head starts to hurt, you breath gets short, or maybe you start to develop a rash. This is what basement mold can do to you. The fact is that there are many people that just cannot stand exposure to mold for even a short period of time.

Mold will affect different people in different ways for several reasons. Naturally there are many and varied types of mold that will thrive in a basement. The cause is generally moisture that settles in basement corners. And the fact is that it can be deadly if not checked. The first thing you need to do is hire a person to come in and do an analysis of the mold. Typically basement mold is not deadly, but certainly it is not healthy to be around it for a lengthy period of time. It can damage your lungs and restrict blood flow if you inhale too much. Hospitalization can be required because you may need to be monitored to avoid going into cardiac arrest. Medications can help kill the mold inside your body.

The first way to combat basement mold is by getting a dehumidifier. Keeping the humidity levels down will prevent any mold from growing. Normally you can wipe away any existing mold with a paper towel, but it is imperative that you wear some sort of mask to keep from inhaling the mold while cleaning. If a simple paper towel doesn't do the trick, try using some bleach. The key is to remove any basement mold as soon as it is discovered. Letting it sit is not only unhealthy, but it can spread to other areas of the basement as well.

The bad news is that no matter what precautions you take, basement mold may continue to grow. If this is the case, it's best to hire someone to come in and determine why the mold is forming, and develop a plan to keep it from happening in the future.
